Alberta has cold continental winters and a long heating season, which leaves roofing with a short, intense outdoor window. Every roofing company in Calgary and Edmonton tries to staff up at the same moment. The ones that recruit in autumn and winter get first pick; the rest compete for whoever is left.
The Alberta roofing labour market
Answer first: two big cities fight over experienced roofers, while regional centres depend on reputation.
- Calgary and Airdrie. A large market where many roofing companies advertise at once in spring. Targeting by quadrant and drive time matters, and an ad that explains your crew structure and work type stands out.
- Edmonton, St. Albert and Strathcona County. Another large market. Sherwood Park and St. Albert often behave like their own hiring areas, so a yard on one side of the city may struggle to attract people from the other.
- Red Deer and Lethbridge. Smaller pools where word of mouth between crews is strong. Treat last season's workers well and make it easy for them to refer friends.
- Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray). A remote market with its own economy, where recruiting often means explaining travel and accommodation clearly.
Weather and the hiring season
Answer first: winter is when Alberta roofing companies win spring.
Long, cold winters mean little or no roofing for months, and then a rush. Southern Alberta's chinook winds can bring sudden mid-winter warm spells, which can make a few days workable, but you can't plan a crew around them.
- Autumn: rate the crew, ask who wants to come back, collect phone numbers.
- Winter: rewrite ads, build hiring pages, test small ad budgets while costs are low.
- Late winter: call the bench, then launch proven ads before the thaw.
- Summer: backfill quits from your list instead of starting over.

Official bodies to know
These are linked so you can check requirements at the source. We don't give safety, HR or legal advice.
- WCB-Alberta is the province's workers' compensation board. It is a starting point for workplace coverage questions; confirm workplace safety and fall-protection training requirements with the appropriate Alberta authorities.
- Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training oversees apprenticeship and trade certification under the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act. If you advertise apprenticeship support, point applicants here.
- Red Seal. Roofer appears on the national Red Seal trades list. How it is designated and administered in Alberta is a provincial matter.
Employment standards and job-posting rules are provincial too. Confirm with Alberta's employment standards office or an employment lawyer.
How we would recruit for an Alberta roofing company
- Start in October, with retention messages and a bench page on your site. See the apprentice and off-season bench.
- Use winter to test two or three ad angles per role, so you know your cost per screened applicant before spring.
- Write ads that answer Alberta questions: start dates, how weather days are handled, travel to acreages or out-of-town jobs, and the type of work.
- Reply in minutes. In the spring rush, the first company to answer usually gets the interview. See applicant text-back.
- Separate Calgary and Edmonton. If you have yards in both, give each its own page and campaign.
Mistakes we see in Alberta
- Posting the first ad in April. By then, the strongest roofers have usually committed.
- City-wide targeting. It wastes spend on people who can't make your start time.
- No plan for summer quits. A short season leaves no time to rebuild a crew from scratch.
- Ads that sound like everyone else's. In a crowded spring market, specifics win.

Frequently asked questions
When should an Alberta roofing company start recruiting?
In the autumn before. Keep your good seasonal workers, build a bench over the winter, test ads in January and February, and hire just before the thaw.
Do chinooks change hiring?
They can. In southern Alberta, a chinook can make a mid-winter week workable, which is useful if you have a few people on call. Most hiring still follows the main season.
Where can we check apprenticeship rules for roofers in Alberta?
Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training oversees apprenticeship and trade certification in the province. Confirm the details for roofing there.
