Where we work

Recruiting roofing crews in British Columbia

BC roofing hiring splits in two: a rain-driven, longer season on the southwest coast and a shorter, colder one in the Interior and North. Your recruiting plan should match the yard, not the province.

In British Columbia, recruiting roofers depends on where your yard is. On the southwest coast around Vancouver and Victoria, winters are mild and wet, so roofing runs through more of the year and rain, not snow, decides the working days. In the Interior and the North, winters are much colder and longer, and hiring looks more like the compressed seasons elsewhere in Canada.

The BC roofing labour market

Answer first: the Lower Mainland is a commute-zone problem, and the rest of BC is a reputation problem.

In Metro Vancouver, roofing companies in Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and Coquitlam all draw from overlapping pools of roofers and labourers, and bridges and traffic decide who can realistically reach a 7 a.m. start. A job ad aimed at "Vancouver" is too broad. We draw the targeting zone around your yard by morning drive time, so a Surrey yard doesn't pay for applicants who live on the North Shore.

Outside the Lower Mainland, in markets like Abbotsford, Kelowna and Greater Victoria (including Saanich), labour pools are smaller and more connected. A roofing company's name as an employer travels quickly between crews. Honest crew video and good treatment of last season's workers often do more than ad spend.

Weather and the hiring season

Answer first: on the coast, plan for rain; inland, plan for a short window.

  • Southwest coast. Work continues through much of the winter, but wet days interrupt it. Roofers here often weigh steady hours heavily, so be clear in your ads about how you handle rain days. Recruiting can run more evenly through the year, with a lift before the drier months.
  • Interior and North. Colder, longer winters compress the outdoor season. Build your bench in the autumn and winter, then hire hard just before the season opens.

Our hiring season calendar shows how to shift the timing for each.

Official bodies to know

We name and link these so you can check requirements at the source. We don't interpret them.

  • WorkSafeBC is BC's workplace safety and workers' compensation body. Start there for workplace safety requirements, including anything related to working at height and fall protection.
  • SkilledTradesBC administers apprenticeship and trades certification in BC. If you advertise apprenticeship support, point applicants there to understand the official path.
  • Red Seal. Roofer appears on the national Red Seal trades list, but how the trade is designated and administered is provincial, so confirm details with SkilledTradesBC.

Job-posting rules and employment standards are also provincial. Confirm them with BC's employment standards office or an employment lawyer before you post.

How we would recruit for a BC roofing company

  1. Map the yard's real commute zone, accounting for bridges, tunnels and peak-hour traffic in the Lower Mainland, or highway distances in the Interior.
  2. Write role-specific ads that speak to rain days, steady hours, crew size and the type of work, whether residential re-roofs, new builds or commercial.
  3. Build a hiring page for each yard and role, with a one-tap call or text to apply. See hiring pages.
  4. Set up instant applicant replies, so a roofer applying to three Lower Mainland companies on a Sunday hears from you first.
  5. Keep a bench through the wet months on the coast, or through the winter inland, with the apprentice and off-season bench.

Mistakes we see in BC

  • One ad for the whole Lower Mainland. It attracts applicants who can't make the commute.
  • Ignoring rain-day hours. On the coast, it is one of the first questions experienced roofers ask.
  • Copying Prairie timing on the coast, or coastal timing in the Interior. The seasons are different.
  • Treating Kelowna or Victoria like Vancouver. Smaller markets reward reputation more than reach.

We are a marketing service, not a contractor or a staffing agency. See pricing or contact us to talk about your BC yard.

Frequently asked questions

Is hiring roofers on the BC coast really year-round?

More so than most of Canada. Mild coastal winters mean roofing continues through much of the year, but rain stops work often, so steady hours are a real selling point if you can offer them.

Where do we check fall-protection requirements in BC?

WorkSafeBC is the provincial workplace safety and compensation body and the place to start. We don't advise on safety requirements; your safety program and WorkSafeBC do.

Who handles roofing apprenticeship in BC?

SkilledTradesBC administers apprenticeship and trades certification in the province. Check there for how a roofing apprenticeship works and how to register an apprentice.
