Recruiting roofing crews in Ontario

Ontario is Canada's largest roofing labour market and also its most crowded. In the south, recruiting is about commute zones and speed; in the north, it is about travel and a shorter season.

Ontario holds the largest roofing labour market in Canada, and it is crowded. Southern Ontario has cold winters moderated near the Great Lakes, which gives the Golden Horseshoe a somewhat longer season than the north. Northern Ontario has longer, colder winters and a shorter window, where recruiting often means travelling crews. Your plan depends on which Ontario you hire in.

The Ontario roofing labour market

Answer first: in the south, you are competing on commute and speed; in the north, on clarity about travel.

  • Greater Toronto Area. Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan form one overlapping labour pool split by highways. A roofer in Brampton might happily work for a Mississauga yard and never consider one in Markham. Drive-time targeting is essential, and replying first matters enormously.
  • Hamilton and Niagara. Strong roofing demand and a labour pool that partly overlaps the western GTA.
  • Ottawa. A large, self-contained market with its own seasonal rhythm and some French-speaking applicants worth reaching in French.
  • London and the southwest. Mid-sized markets where reputation travels between crews and referrals do a lot of work.
  • The north. Smaller pools and longer distances; ads must cover travel, accommodation and the length of the season.

For companies hiring only inside the City of Toronto, our sister site Toronto.Works goes deeper on commute-zone recruiting across the city's trades.

Weather and the hiring season

Answer first: southern Ontario opens earlier, the north later; stagger your recruiting accordingly.

  • Southern Ontario. Build the bench in autumn, test ads over the winter, and launch at full budget a few weeks before your first busy week.
  • Northern Ontario. Start even earlier, because the season is shorter and people who are willing to travel get committed early.
  • Everywhere. Plan for mid-season backfill. A small always-on ad and a list of screened backups cost far less than an emergency push in July.

The hiring season calendar lays this out month by month.

Official bodies to know

Linked so you can check at the source. We don't interpret employment, safety or apprenticeship rules.

  • WSIB, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, handles workplace insurance in Ontario. For safety training requirements, including working at heights and fall protection, confirm with the appropriate Ontario authorities and your safety provider.
  • Skilled Trades Ontario is responsible for apprenticeship and trade certification. If you advertise apprenticeship support, send applicants there for the official route.
  • Red Seal. Roofer is on the national Red Seal trades list; designation and administration are provincial.

Employment standards, including anything that governs how a job is advertised, are provincial. Check the Ontario government's guidance or an employment lawyer before you publish.

How we would recruit for an Ontario roofing company

  1. Draw a drive-time zone per yard, especially in the GTA, where highways divide the labour pool.
  2. Write separate ads per role, with the type of work, start time, crew structure and travel stated plainly. See crew recruiting ads.
  3. Build hiring pages for each yard and role, so applicants see the real job. See hiring pages.
  4. Reply within minutes, because GTA roofers often apply to several companies the same evening. See applicant text-back.
  5. Reach French-speaking applicants in Ottawa and parts of eastern and northern Ontario with French versions where it makes sense.

Mistakes we see in Ontario

  • City-wide targeting in the GTA. It produces applicants who can't make the commute.
  • Slow replies. In the most crowded market in the country, a day's delay often loses the applicant.
  • Copying southern timing in the north. Northern seasons and labour pools are different.
  • Posting before checking provincial requirements. Confirm them first.

We are a marketing service, not a contractor or a staffing agency. See pricing or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

How should a GTA roofing company target recruiting ads?

By morning drive time to the yard, not by city name. Highways and traffic patterns decide who can reach a 7 a.m. start from Brampton, Vaughan or Markham far more than distance does.

Does Ontario have rules about job postings?

Employment standards and any job-posting requirements are set by the province. We don't interpret them; check the Ontario government's employment standards guidance or speak with an employment lawyer before you publish.

Who handles roofing apprenticeship in Ontario?

Skilled Trades Ontario is the provincial body for apprenticeship and trade certification. Confirm how roofing apprenticeship works and how to register an apprentice there.
