Recruiting roofing crews in Prince Edward Island

PEI's roofing labour pool is small and everyone knows everyone. Recruiting here is less about reach and more about being the company roofers recommend to each other.

On Prince Edward Island the Gulf of St. Lawrence takes some edge off the cold, but winters still bring real snow and a clear break in roofing work. Its roofing labour market is small and closely connected: Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall are close enough that roofers know each other's employers. Recruiting here is about reputation first and reach second.

The PEI roofing labour market

Answer first: on an island this size, your employer reputation is your recruiting campaign.

  • Charlottetown and Stratford. The largest connected pool and where most competing roofing companies are based.
  • Summerside. The second centre, with its own crews and a short commute to much of western PEI.
  • Three Rivers and Cornwall. Smaller communities where nearly every hire comes through a personal connection.

Because people talk, how you treated last season's workers is the first thing many applicants will hear about you. That makes retention, honest crew content and a good first week more valuable than a large ad budget.

Weather and the hiring season

Answer first: plan for a defined season and a quick start once the snow is gone.

Snowy winters, softened by the Gulf, set a clear off-season. Companies that keep in touch with their seasonal crew over the winter tend to start the season with most of their people back. The rhythm:

  • an exit conversation with every worker you want back, before they leave in the autumn
  • a few useful updates over the winter, only to people who asked to hear from you
  • a call list ready before the season opens
  • a small ad aimed at newcomers and people entering the trade

The hiring season calendar gives more detail.

Official bodies to know

Linked so you can check requirements at the source. We don't interpret them.

  • WCB PEI, the Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island, is a starting point for workplace safety and compensation questions. Confirm fall-protection and other training requirements with the appropriate provincial authorities.
  • PEI Apprenticeship oversees apprenticeship and trade certification on the Island.
  • Red Seal. Roofer is on the national Red Seal trades list; provincial designation applies.

For employment standards or posting rules, check with the province or an employment lawyer.

How we would recruit for a PEI roofing company

  1. Protect the reputation you have: retention messages and a winter bench with the off-season bench service.
  2. Make referrals easy: a hiring page and short clips your crews are proud to share. See crew video.
  3. Reach newcomers with a small, targeted ad that explains training and the first week. See crew recruiting ads.
  4. Reply quickly and personally. In a small market, a slow or careless reply gets talked about.

The first week matters more on an island

Answer first: on PEI, a new hire's first week becomes part of your recruiting story within days, so plan it.

Small markets magnify everything. A labourer who is left standing in the yard on day one, or sent up without anyone explaining the job, tells friends. One who is met at the truck, paired with an experienced roofer and checked on at the end of the week tells friends too. We help you write a simple first-week plan and film a short clip about it, so applicants know what to expect and current crews can share it.

Things a first-week plan should cover:

  • who meets the new person and where
  • what gear and safety equipment are issued, under your own safety program
  • who they shadow for the first days
  • a quick check-in at the end of week one and week two

Mistakes we see on PEI

  • Spending big on reach. The pool is small; spend on reputation and retention instead.
  • Poor first weeks. Word spreads quickly when a new hire has a bad experience.
  • Losing touch over the winter. Your best seasonal workers may be recruited by someone else before spring.

We are a marketing and consulting service, not a contractor or staffing agency. See pricing or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Is paid recruiting worth it on PEI?

A modest budget can help, mainly to reach people just entering the trade or moving to the Island. Most experienced roofers will hear about you through other roofers, so reputation matters more.

Who handles roofing apprenticeship on PEI?

PEI Apprenticeship, part of the Government of PEI, oversees apprenticeship and trade certification. Confirm roofing details with them.

How do we recruit people new to roofing?

Be very clear about training, pairing with experienced roofers and the realities of the work. A short video of a first week on your crews does more than any ad copy.
